The Source of Transplantation
Dr. Woody Van Meter MD.
This past October 25th we held our Annual Surgeons Forum, bringing together corneal transplant surgeons from all over our area to learn more about the care of our shared patients. This year’s guest speaker was Dr. Woodford Van Meter, Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Kentucky and current Chair of the Eye Bank Association of America. Dr. Van Meter went to medical school at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic, and fellowship at the Robert W. Woodruff Health Science Center of Emory University.
This year’s topics ranged from an expert’s explanation of how transplant tissue goes from donor to patient, followed by case studies on donor tissue suitability so that our surgeons can select the best cornea for their patients. Lastly, Dr. Van Meter discussed the benefits that corneal transplantation has on the recipients so that surgeons can be better advocates for their patients when they deal with insurance companies.
